Savannah Riverboat Cruises

Company History

River Street Riverboat Company established itself in Savannah, Georgia in 1991 under the direction of its experienced captain, Jonathan H. Claughton. Since 1991 the company has grown, changed and established itself as a mainstay along historic River Street.

In 1991, Mr. Claughton accepted a brave, new challenge: bringing a dinner cruise tour to Savannah, Georgia. After doing his research, he invested in the River Queen, a 400 passenger vessel. In 1997 after six years of success, Mr. Claughton expanded and added an additional riverboat, the 600 passenger Georgia Queen. Both boats feature two, climate-controlled dining decks and an open-air third deck. Decorated in traditional red, white and blue riverboat colors these boats help draw visitors back to a time when elegance and relaxation were a priority. Offering a variety of cruises including: the popular sightseeing cruise, dinner entertainment cruise, Saturday luncheon, Sunday brunch, Monday night gospel entertainment cruise, Thursday night Murder-a-Float cruise and the Moonlight entertainment cruise – there is sure to be a tour for everyone!

When asked what makes his company successful, Mr. Claughton said, “If you give good service, the public will flock to the waterfront and enjoy what you have to offer. I cannot help to think this is the winning formula if you run a small ferry boat or a multi-state excursion operation.”

As for the future of the business, expansions are already in progress. The company is now promoting their off site catering company, Big Water Catering and Events. In winter 2007, the company welcomed the newest edition to their fleet—the 800 passenger New Savannah River Queen. The newest boat to the fleet features three climate controlled dining rooms, three bars, a snack shop, large dining areas perfect for large groups and an open air, covered third deck. The third deck also features a VIP room capable of accommodating 30 people.

When asked about the future, Claughton said, “We will continue to be a center stage fixture on River Street. We have seen a slow and steady growth through the years. I know we will continue to expand.”
